During a City Council meeting Tuesday, administrators said it's too late to stop proposed Baltimore City Schools layoffs.
The school system is obligated by union contracts to notify employees by June 1. City Schools CEO Dr. Sonja Santelises announced layoffs last Friday to balance the budget for next school year.

No more than 75 teachers will be cut in core subjects like science and English.
"Clearly any layoffs are not desirable," Santelises said. "However, really given that it could have been upwards to a thousand and we're down to no more than 75, that's pretty significant. And we're still working to reduce that number as much as possible."
The 300 layoffs will include assistant principals, guidance counselors and central office employyes.
