Baltimore City Schools CEO Sonja Santelises announced that the school system would be laying off nearly 300 employees before next school year.
She says the total number of layoffs will be under 300 and "fewer than 75 classroom teachers in core content areas will be affected."
"While funding for the coming year is not ideal, I assure you that we can--and will--give every student in Baltimore opportunities to grow and achieve," Santelises said in a statement. "I’m looking forward to watching this year’s graduates cross the stage in a few short weeks, a reminder that our children have bright futures when we give them opportunities and the support they deserve."
"Baltimore City Public Schools is facing the largest budget gap in its history. There are, however, far more teachers who will remain employed than projected because of the collaboration among Dr. Santelesis, Governor Hogan and I to mitigate the impact of the structural deficit through increased City and State funding to our public schools," Mayor Catherine Pugh said in a statement.
The district released the FY 2018 budget Friday and closed a budget gap of over $100 million.
