A crime scene Wednesday night in Cherry Hill, in which a Baltimore Police officer accidentally shot himself, all started with a carjacking of two women in Federal Hill.
Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith said carjackings are up in the city.
“There have been eight so far this year in what we call sector 4, two in the Federal Hill neighborhood,” Smith said.
Smith urged for people, if they find themselves in that situation, to give the thieves what they want and don’t fight back or speed off.
"Ultimately it’s just not worth it. It's property that can be replaced, you can't. These bad guys, they aren't always going to be going to jail for these extended periods of time. They commit these acts and are back on the street. They can commit these acts and get away with it. We don't want you to fall victim to that,” he said.
Baltimore police urge drivers to lock their car doors and pay attention to their surroundings.
Smith says thieves usually take the cars and leave them in Cherry Hill intact.
Carjackings are up by 233% in what police call the southern district. That's according to a crime data report from the city of Baltimore. So far there have been 40 for the entire year in comparison to the 12 that happened last year.
