BALTIMORE, Md. (WMAR) - Thousands came to Mount Vernon Thursday night for the annual Monument lighting. It's a tradition here in Baltimore and even with all the violence going on in the city, many said it's events like these that keep Baltimore together.
"I feel like Baltimore is an awesome place," said one resident.
And so did the droves of people who came to celebrate the annual mainstay in the city. With just a few weeks left in 2017, there's already been 327 homicides in the city and a rash of violence like robberies and assaults stemming from the Inner Harbor and permeating through the city.
"You have to be streetwise you have to have your awareness genes kicking in," said resident, Rebecca Cowling.
Even knowing that, these baltimoreans show up with pride for their city.
"I think we have to be resolute and continue to support the city and support things like this and not cower in our homes," said Cowling.
The inspirational music from the stage could be heard for blocks.
Over 16,000 lights were used to light the monument. Even some shops and restaurants stayed open to get into the holiday spirit all in an effort to unite the city.
