5 tips to help you "ease the freeze!"

BALTIMORE - Arctic blasts, ugh, they are never "fun."  However, these tips may help you "ease through the freeze" just a little more headache free!

1) Protect your Plumbing:  Let those faucets drip, and if there is time, drain any outdoor plumbing or spigot.  (just be careful you don't create to an iceberg in the process in your backyard)!  Also, insulate pipes in exterior walls whenever doing a rehab project.

2) Keep the Car from Freezing Up:  Even if you don't have a garage, there are things you can do to help keep the automobile running smoothly, such as keeping the gas tank more than half way full to prevent gas-line freeze, and starting it up and running it for 10 or 15 minutes to let it warm up and thaw a few times per day.  Also, when you can, get that anti-freeze tested, and don't forget to get the non-freeze version of windshield wiper fluid so that doesn't freeze up on you.

3) Protect the Paws:  It goes without saying to not leave animals outside in the harsh weather, but even on brief walks and bathroom breaks, remember sub-freezing pavement and concrete can be very hard on your pets paws.  Do what you can to protect them, such as getting "booties" for their feet.  Also, if they have an extra water dish outside, make sure it doesn't stay iced over.

4) Don't Dry Out:  Moisturize, literally. And we're not just talking Jergens here!  You see, the coldest air of the year, is also the driest air.  In fact, there nearly "zero moisture" in arctic air.  So if you have humidifiers at home, now is the time to crank them up!  Also, Chapstick and lotion will probably make your skin feel better, (and maybe, just a little warmer).

5) Frostbite Proof Exercise:  While now is probably not the time to do a long distance run or bike ride (unless you have amazing gear), getting in a quality indoor workout will both raise your core temperature for a few hours, and, boost you psychologically during a time where you might otherwise feel stressed from "cabin fever" and being stuck inside.
