Zombies infect Maryland at annual obstacle course run (VIDEO)

Bruised. Bloody. Muddy. Devoured.

Saturday gave me a lot of reasons to doubt myself in the event of a real zombie apocalypse. Granted, I'd probably avoid narrow passages and mud pits if the dead ever walked the earth. I'd also be armed with, at least, a shovel.

In any event, the annual  Run For Your Lives zombie-themed obstacle 5K —held at the Wicomico Motorsport Park this weekend—separated the infected from the survivors, the appetizers from the fish that skipped off the pier, the brainless from the hard-headed.

I think you get the picture.

The course lives up to its name. Runners are given three flags at the start of the course and sent off through a series of hills, mud bogs, tunnels, windy forest pathways, all while "zombies" chase and stumble over themselves to "eat" you brains (ie.. flags).

Suffice it to say, it appears I've let myself go in the year since I "  survived " the 2012 run at the course where the national spectacle was founded in Darlington, Md.

I was K-O'd inside of the first mile this year.

To be fair, it's not always 91 degrees in early October. And we were unfortunate to be tracked by fresh "shift changed" zombies.

About 6,000 runners traversed the 5K—most finishing with the "infected" medal around their necks. Based on the national popularity of the brand, the 5K will most likely return in 2014, just in time for me to do a few more sit-ups.

Check out the video for a 3-minute romp through the zombie-laden woods of Charlotte Hall, Md.
