House panel to hold hearing on prison contraband

ANNAPOLIS - A Baltimore delegate says a hearing will be held to discuss a large smuggling conspiracy allegedly involving 13 female corrections officers, seven inmates and five others with gang ties.

Delegate Curt Anderson, a Baltimore Democrat who requested the hearing, said Thursday it will be held before the House Judiciary Committee on May 8.
Anderson says he asked for the hearing so lawmakers could hear facts to make an assessment about the state of the Baltimore City Detention system.
Federal prosecutors announced the indictments of 25 people this week for plotting to smuggle drugs, cell phones and other contraband into Baltimore's jail and other correctional facilities.
The indictment alleged that the ring involved sex between inmates and guards that led to four of the officers becoming pregnant.
