Gov. Hogan creates Maryland Outdoor Recreational Economic Commission to boost outdoor rec industry

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Getting into the outdoors is a great way to recharge your batteries. It's also big business for Maryland.

The outdoor recreation economy generates 109,000 jobs, $14 billion in consumer spending, and $95 million in state and local tax revenue.

To strengthen the industry, Governor Larry Hogan created the Maryland Outdoor Recreational Economic (MORE) Commission. The commission will develop strategies to market Maryland's outdoor and heritage recreation brand, and recommend ways to grow and attract new companies, as well as support existing outdoor recreation businesses.

"Maryland is abundant with natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources that contribute significantly to our economy and quality of life," said Gov. Hogan. "This commission will help ensure that our state's natural heritage is strengthened and ultimately preserving our resources for future generations."

The commission will be co-chaired by Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources, Mark Belton and Secretary of the Department of Commerce Mike Gill. It will prepare a final report for the governor by December 1, 2019.
