BALTIMORE (WMAR) - More Baltimore schools could be on the chopping block this year.
The school board is considering another round of schools to close across the city. On Tuesday they will have a special meeting to discuss the recommendations and hear from community members. Parents and students are reportedly outraged and many plan on protesting the closures at the meeting.
A total of six schools are being recommended to the school board for closure at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. The school district had previously named two schools that could face closure and now added four more schools to the list.
One of the schools up for closure is the only middle school option for students in the Sandtown- Winchester neighborhood, William Pinderhughes Elementary/Middle School. The recommendations are said to be the result of declining enrollment and poor academic performance.
After a series of public meetings, the school board will vote on these recommendations on December 19.
Parents and students have started to protest at 6:00 p.m., right before the special meeting set for 7:00 p.m. Officials have provided a sign-up sheet in the lobby of the district administrative office for anyone who wants to speak before the board.
