Man dies in police custody

BALTIMORE (WMAR) - A man died after going into cardiac arrest in police custody Thursday evening.

Baltimore City Police explain officers were making a traffic stop, when one of two individuals in the car resisted arrest.

The incident happened in the area of Kitmore Road in Northeast Baltimore .

Police say there was an altercation and struggle between at least one officer and the man who reportedly resisted arrest.

Witnesses tell ABC2 News that officers were seen beating the man with batons and spraying him with pepper spray

During the struggle, one of the officers called for help before realizing the man went into cardiac arrest. Police identified the man as 44-year-old  Tyrone West.

The man was taken to an area hospital by an ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

The officer involved in the altercation were not injured.

Police are unsure how many officers responded to the scene and have not released the name of the man who died.

Last year on September 21, 46-year-old Anthony Anderson was killed during an altercation with Baltimore Police. A report from the Medical Examiner's Office revealed Anderson died from blunt force injuries.  Anderson had fractured ribs, a ruptured spleen, and internal bleeding.
