NW Baltimore fire ruled a murder

Man arrested for restraining victim; setting fire

BALTIMORE - Baltimore police arrested 38 year-old Monte Carter saying he assaulted 32-year-old Jennifer Conyers in her Northwest Baltimore home Friday evening, restrained her in the basement and then set the house on fire.

ABC2 News reported on the fire Friday evening in the 5700 block of Highgate Drive.

Carter is now charged with murder, arson, false imprisonment, robbery and malicious burning.

According to charging documents, Carter met Conyers through and online dating service. The two had a brief relationship.

Police believe Carter assaulted Conyers and then tied her up with computer cables and speaker wire. According to the charging documents, Conyers was dragged to the basement, where the fire was lit.

Conyers' Ford Mustang was missing until Carter was pulled over by police and taken into custody. They say Carter was driving the vehicle and was also using Conyers' ATM card.
