Driver dies after rear ending dump truck

A 49-year-old Baltimore man died early Tuesday morning after he rear ended a dump truck on I-83 for unknown reasons.

Police say they were called to the accident scene just before 2:30 a.m. to northbound I-83 at Kelly Ave. They found the driver and passenger of a DPW Dump Truck trying to administer aid to the driver and extinguish smoke coming from a Honda Civic that had run into the back of them.

The Civic driver was rushed to Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced deceased; he has been identified as Thomas Linzey of the 3600 block of Kenmar Rd.

Investigation shows that the DPW dump truck was working at a slow rate of speed to clear debris off the road; it was equipped and operating the function arrow board and rear crash bar to warn drivers.

The Honda Civic was travelling northbound behind the truck when it ran into it; police say there were no signs of braking or efforts from the driver to avoid the collision.

Police say both Linzey and the driver of the truck were properly licensed. Police have determined the fault of the crash is solely on the Honda Civic driver; the DPW employee was lawfully operating his truck.
