City Council holding hearing on Baltimore City Police Academy training

BALTIMORE (WMAR) - The Baltimore City Council is holding a public hearing about how police cadets are trained.

This hearing was called after a sergeant within the police academy told the media he felt police recruits weren't nearly as prepared as they should be. Sergeant Joshua Rosenblatt told the Baltimore Sun recruits were graduating from the academy without a basic understanding of the laws they must follow.

The Baltimore Police Union then echoed Rosenblatt's statements. They released a response on Twitter saying they brought up training concerns to the Department of Justice back in 2016.

The police union says they welcome a review by Police Commissioner-designate Darryl De Sousa into the academy's curriculum.

It is unclear when the hearing will be held, it was canceled on Tuesday.
