Dozens gathered to celebrate birthday of missing New Jersey man

Friends and family gathered to celebrate the birthday of a New Jersey man who's been missing for more than three months.

David Smith was last seen on the 2000 block of Woodbine Road in Howard County on August 6th. Smith came to Maryland to visit a friend and never returned home.

"I don't sleep," said David's mother, Julie Smith. "I haven't slept in 112 days."

It's been 112 days since anyone has seen or heard from Smith. Despite no leads, the family remains hopeful.

"We pray, we hope, we trust that someone will come forward with truthful information to help us find him," said Julie Smith.

During the vigil, family and friends sang and prayed together. The Smith family hopes that vigils will continue to help spread awareness and hopefully gain some answers.

"It's been trying. It's been incredibly trying," said John Skwirut, a family friend. "I think the whole congregation is supportive but of course we're deeply concerned about where David is."

Howard County Police say they will continue to search for Smith. So far they have no viable leads on his whereabouts. The unknown has been the hardest part to cope with for his parents.

"There are a variety of things that create some real questions for us," said Doug Smith, David's father. "There just are no answers at this time."

"There's enough suspicious behavior surrounding this story that it brings fear to us," said Julie Smith.

There is currently a $6,000 reward for information on David's whereabouts. Anyone with information is asked to call Howard County Police at 410-313-STOP or email  HCPDcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov
