CATONSVILLE, Md. - A Baltimore County police officer shot a man to death after he ignored orders to drop a knife, police said.
Police identified the man who was shot as 36-year-old Gregory Stegall. Police also identified the shooter as Officer Farelly, an eight year veteran assigned to Precinct 1/Wilkens Division. The officer's first name was not released.
According to officials, around 3:45 Sunday morning Officer Farelly was on patrol when he saw Stegall behind a Shell Station in the area of Edmondson Ave. and North Bend Rd in Catonsville. Police said the officer asked him to come from behind the business, but he refused and pulled out a knife.
Farelly tried to use his taser on the Stegall but it was ineffective. Stegall, still armed with the knife began to walk towards the officer, ignoring orders to stop. Police said the officer, "fearing for his life," fired his gun hitting Stegall once. He was taken to St. Agnes Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officer Farelly has been placed on routine administrative leave.
