Police warn of thefts from gym lockers in Anne Arundel County

PASADENA, Md. - Lock your lockers and stash your valuables in your trunk. The message comes from Anne Arundel County police, after six locks were broken, all in one location, all in one day.
The focus is on LA Fitness in Pasadena this time, but similar incidents have happened at other gyms. On Jan. 7, police say someone was able to break locks and get away with cash, credit cards, cell phones and even a Rolex watch.
Police aren't certain how it was done, and LA Fitness has not commented. Three days before, police say a car window was broken in the parking lot and someone took a purse. Then police say a man used stolen credit cards from that purse at the Target nearby.
Police released a surveillance picture from the store. Members of LA Fitness are exercising their own safety.
"What are you going to do, you go in the locker room and the lockers you can see, you use those lockers. Because people want to steal they're going to go in the corner where you can't see them, cut the lock, take stuff and leave," said Don Williams a member at LA Fitness.
Anne Arundel County police say you should use a heavy steel lock, not a wire cable like you have for luggage. If you have valuables with you, you're told to lock them in your trunk instead of carrying them inside.
"Travel light, just the required items that you need, whether that's a license, a credit card, just something you can tuck away in your workout gear and maybe keep your keys with you," said Justin Mulcahy, Anne Arundel County police spokesman.
Also on Jan. 7, someone broke a car window in the parking lot of Planet Fitness in Glen Burnie. A lock was broken at the YMCA in Arnold. Right now, police don't know if they're connected, but you're asked to be on alert.
