Better Business Bureau says beware of scam charities following Boston bombings

Whenever there is a tragedy on the level of what happened at the Boston Marathon, our first instinct is to try to help in some way.

But the Better Business Bureau is warning that at least one charity scam hoping to capitalize on good will has already popped up.

Here are a few of the tips the BBB says can prevent you from donating to a scam charity:

First, take a minute to check out any charity you're thinking about giving to.

Many states require charities to register, so if you can't find them on the list, that could be a red flag.

Always ask how your donation will be used.

Beware of texts or emails soliciting donations.

Never click on a link that requires you to download something just to donate.
