Comptroller, BGE promoting Shop Maryland Weekend

Comptroller Peter Franchot and officials with Baltimore Gas and Electric Company teamed up to promote Shop Maryland Energy Weekend at Cummins Appliance in Pikesville on Monday.

Shop Maryland Energy Weekend will start on Saturday, February 17 and end on Monday, February 19.

During the weekend consumers will not have to pay the 6% state sales tax on any purchase of qualifying Energy Star appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, furnaces, and boilers.

"The state loses maybe $600,000 in sales tax revenue because we're not collecting the 6% on these items. We make it up in additional shopping because its impulse buying. They come in and see something not on the list and want to buy it. It's good for the state, good for consumers, good for family budgets, and good for the environment," said Franchot.

Consumers will also be able to take advantage of rebates from $30 to $500 on certified appliances from the BG Smart Energy Savers Program.
