The dog days of summer are HERE! Depending on who you ask and where you live, the dog days of summer can occur at different times. But here in Baltimore, the hottest days of the year climatologically are July 9 – 17th.

Dog days are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. But how did they get their name?

It all started with the Romans.  The Romans associated hot weather with the star Sirius.  They considered Sirius to be the ‘dog star’ because it’s the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major.  The Romans sacrificed a brown dog at the beginning of the Dog Days to appease the rage of Sirius, believing that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather.
