Tonight we'll have the farthest and smallest full moon of the year. It's called an Apogee Moon or "Mini Moon."
This moon occurs less than one day after reaching lunar apogee, the moon’s farthest point in its monthly orbit.
During this time the moon will be nearly 30 thousand miles away from the earth, before its elliptical transition back towards the earth. The opposite of this occurrence is the more famous Supermoon, which will occur later this year in November.
Clouds and rain will play the role of spoiler this time around for the mini moon. Next chance we'll have to see it is June 9, 2017.
