After a below average start to May our weather will turn around next week with a building ridge of high pressure. This will open the door for warmer temps to flow into the Mid Atlantic for much of next week. Our average temperature for May is currently 2° below average and we've only experienced one 80° day so far this month. Even though that's below normal, believe it or not, it's still more than this time last May.
Reason for the May Chill
A pattern called an Omega Block is partly to blame for the May chill. It's called an omega block due to the Jetream's shape resembling the Greek symbol Omega Ω. We've been stuck underneath this pattern for some time, which has put Maryland in a constant state of atmospheric lift. This brings cloudy skies, multiple chances of rain and a cooler northwest wind flow. The grips of this pattern has finally began to shift east, and as it does our weather will improve.
