Meteorological spring has arrived

Happy spring! Well, wait a minute. You may have thought that spring begins March 20 and you would be correct -- sort of.

March 20 is the Vernal (or spring) Equinox and the official start to spring in the northern hemisphere.

Mother Nature tells a different story, however. Based on average temperatures, meteorological winter begins closer to December 1 not December  21 and it ends closer to March 1 not March 20, which brings us to meteorological spring.

Meteorological spring begins on March 1, 2016 in the northern hemisphere. The meteorological seasons are divided according to the calendar months based on those average temperatures. December, January and February are winter months. June, July and August are summer months. September, October and November are fall months and March, April and May are spring months.

Spring is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life in plants, animals and even humans. The term is also used as a metaphor for the start of better times.

Spring is also one of the two severe weather seasons. Warm air invades from lower latitudes and cold air is still pushing in from the Polar region, or what I like to call the clashing of the air masses!

We do have 19 more days until spring has officially sprung, but we meteorologists just love meteorological seasons!
