With cold arctic air in place, any system bringing precipitation will have an opportunity to bring snow to Maryland. Here's a look at the temperature & precipitation outlook from the Climate Prediction Center, which is also in line with this thinking.
The outlook is in support of an active December - especially considering the combination of below average temps with above average precipitation.
What's in Store?
The previous blog brought attention to a pattern shift bringing cold & snow - but it appears that may be just the beginning. There's some early indications that while the cold air's in place - an active jet stream will set up as well. This will create strong upper and mid-level divergence, providing a lot of lift in the atmosphere allowing multiple low pressure systems to develop. This is always good recipe for snow and wintry precip.
Current Thinking on the Pattern
At this point the Mid-Atlantic is in play for active weather December 12th - 18th. Within this window of activity we'll have a couple shots at accumulating snowfall just before the holidays. Be sure to keep up with the 7-Day Forecastsince any snow or wintry precip during this time of year can be a nuisance to travelers, whether it hits the Mid-Atlantic or not.
