Damaging Winds and Tornadoes Possible Today

The risk for storms remains high today

ABC 2 and Maryland's Most Powerful Weather Radar is tracking the threat for a few strong storms and isolated tornadoes later this afternoon. A strong storm system accompanied by deep, rich gulf of Mexico moisture will advance through the state later today. Strong dynamics in the upper levels could aid a few storms to rotate causing tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Maryland and Delaware under a 10% risk for tornadoes and a 30% risk for general severe storms capable of bringing down strong winds, lightning, and torrential rains. This risk is rather high for this part of the country.


The timeframe for the storms to develop is after 2 pm through the evening hours. This is when our tornado risk will be on the high side. A line of strong and severe thunderstorms will then move through the area clearing everything offshore by later tonight. This line of storms could also pack winds in excess of 50 mph.

The storms moving our way has prompted tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings alreadin in North Carolina and Georgia as they move north.
