A cold blast of Arctic Air will take the plunge by the end of the work week, as a potent cold front moves through on Thursday. The Arctic Air is fitting because it is winter.....well, Meteorological winter!

We will have the coldest air of the season so far. Low temps will dive into the low to mid 20s and the highs will struggle to reach 40 degrees.  Not only will the actual temperatures be cold but the wind is going to make it feel even colder with wind chills in the low 30s to upper 20s during the day and teens at night.

Cold weather lovers, this upcoming weekend is definitely for you, so enjoy!  If you are not a fan of the cold weather, make sure you have wood for the fireplace, extra blankets and warm beverages on hand because it may be a shock to the system for warm weather lovers.

Meteorological winter began on December 1st and it is not going any where any time soon. It is a three month period that runs from December 1st to the end of February. It is the coldest three month period of the year in the northern hemisphere.

Astronomical winter  will begin on December 21st. It is what we all refer to when we talk about the winter season and this is based on when the sun reaches the most southern point on the globe, the Tropic of Capricorn. If you are located exactly on the Tropic of Capricorn at noon on the first day of astronomical winter, the sun will be directly overhead.  Also, on the first day of astronomical winter, the sun is a its lowest point in our sky at noon and it is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. In the Southern hemisphere it is the first day of summer.

At this rate, December looks to be cold with several chances of snow. Stay tuned!
