Hot weather brings high demand for Baltimore ice company

It's another busy day at AAA Ice on Belair Road.

"It doesn't sit here long, typically right after I make it, within 24-hours it's in somebody's store or place,” said President of AAA Ice, John Mcpherson.  “So doesn’t last long."

The ice is made 24-hours a day, but even that constant production can't keep-up with the current demand.  This heat wave has orders coming in nonstop, and employees working up a sweat.

AAA Ice is even trucking-in bagged ice from suppliers to help.

"It's crazy, totally crazy,” Mcpherson said.  “Everything has been tripled, quadrupled in orders.  After about 3 or 4 days of the heat, it's like Armageddon, it's just everybody comes out of the woodwork, all of the general orders that we have are tripled, and we're just trying to keep up with the demand."

The third generation family business has been around since the 1920's.  They manufacture, package, and deliver ice across the state.

The plant is running seven-days a week, churning out 40-tons of cold, clear ice every single day.  That's about 2,000 bags heading to local companies, neighborhood shops, and homes with folks in the area daily.

No one at AAA Ice is complaining about the boom for their bottom line, or the working conditions inside the ice plant when the temps are triple-digits outside.

"Ahhh the temperature in here, it's great, 25-degrees,” said Mcpherson.  “My kinda temperature."

Definitely one of the coolest places in Charm City.
