A dangerous heat wave gripping millions in cities across the country is being blamed for the deaths of several children in only a few days.
The latest case reported in Texas on Sunday. Police are investigating a Dallas father who left his 2-year-old son in the car while at church.
The young boy is the 23 child to die in a hot car so far this year. It's alarming experts since only 25 children died in all of last year.
General Motors is equipping some newer vehicles with a system to alert parents.
"The rear seat reminder cannot detect the presence of a child in the back seat," said General Motors spokesperson Trisha Morrow. "Instead, it detects rear door usage and it uses that rear door usage to indicate that there might be something in the back seat."
Safety experts have a simple message: 'look before you lock.' If it helps, they also suggest putting something in the back seat to help drivers remember to check it when traveling with a child.
