Dangers of texting while driving

Text messaging is one of the top distractions for drivers behind the wheel.

ABC2's Lauren Cook tested out a virtual course designed to help students learn a life-saving lesson.

It gives a realistic impression of driving at a high rate of speed, while using simulated goggles.

When asked to text message during the experience, the dangers were extremely apparent.

Most users crashed the virtual car, swerved into oncoming traffic and even struck pedestrians.

Text messaging is very real to young drivers. A recent Consumer Reports study found that 80% of young drivers admitted to texting, using the internet or smartphone apps while in the driver's seat.

Another survey by the AD Council found that drivers are twenty three times more likely to crash their car text messaging than if they were drunk.
