After two games, a 1-1 record, and an 18 point comeback win, you'd think Towson head coach Rob Ambrose knows what he has in his team this year. Nope.
“No. Not yet. While the program pretty much stays the same, every team is different every year,” said Ambrose. “We’re still figuring it out, what we can be.”
One thing’s for sure, there’s no more figuring out what Ambrose has in receiver Christian Summers. The senior is the reigning Colonial Athletic Association offensive player of the week after a career-best six catches for 232 yards and two touchdowns in last Saturday’s win over St. Francis.
“It felt good,” Summers said. “The best feeling was getting that win. At the end of the day that’s all you want. It felt good”
“The good news about him is while he’s grown and matured, there’s still more room for him to grow. It’s still early in the year. We’re expecting big things from him,” Ambrose said.

This weekend brings the first conference game of the year, a visit to Villanova (1-1). For the contest the Tigers will be switching things up under center. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Ellis Knudson is in line for his first career start. Previous starter Morgan Mahalak hurt his shoulder last weekend. Knudson replaced Mahalak against St. Francis and engineered the Tigers’ comeback victory.
“Ellis has been here for a couple years. So, there’s a confidence that when he walks in the huddle,” said Ambrose. “There’s a little bit of a greater understanding in some of the things that we do. Because he knows the offense it allows us do a little bit more.”
“There’s a lot of trust there,” said senior fullback and Baltimore native Emmanuel Holder. “He knows the offense. He’s not afraid to make checks and stuff like that. We know him and he knows us. We know we’re in good hands with Ellis.”
“He’s calm, collected, which is what we look for in that huddle,” said Summers. “He comes in there confident and that’s all we need.”
The Tigers have only won once at Villanova since the wildcats joined the Colonial athletic association nine years ago. Kickoff Saturday is at 3:30.
