This has been a year of firsts for me as far as races. Back in August I ran my first triathlon and Saturday I ran my first 10K.

I'm not really a runner, but I've always been an athlete. My co-blogger Allison Bourg has run the Annapolis Running Class half marathon the past two years. This year, she was a race ambassador and convinced me to sign up for the 10K.

I in turn invited two of my friends to participate with me. While my training didn't go as well as planned, race day was a very welcome surprise.

As many of you might know, working in the news business means odd hours, most of us don't work 9-5. I typically work in the late afternoons and evenings. With the race starting at 7 a.m., I was up at an hour I never see.

Plus, I was able to see a gorgeous sunrise. I can't tell you the last time I was awake to see the sunrise. It was perfect, coming right up over the water in downtown Annapolis. It definitely distracted me and made those first two miles enjoyable.

The distance turned out to be perfect for me. I took my time and I wasn't exhausted after finishing. My friends loved the race as well and we got very lucky with the weather. It was truly the perfect day for a race. Guess I have to thank Allison for "making me" sign up!

Any suggestions for what I should tackle next?
