This mild winter has been great for a lot of outdoor activities – just not for skiers and snowboarders trying to hit the slopes.

Finally, after a few days of cold weather and nonstop snowmaking, Liberty Mountain Resort, Roundtop Mountain Resort and Whitetail Mountain Resort are all open.

Marketing director at Liberty Mountain Resort, Anne Weimer said that the resort usually opens mid-December, so they’re a couple of weeks behind.

“We got a late start. It’s disappointing to skiers, snowboarders and us,” she said.

All three resorts concentrated on covering key traffic areas of the slopes. The goal is to have a good, solid base and then move on to the other areas of the mountain. This weekend, about 40 percent of terrain will be open at each of the resorts.

Liberty Mountain Resort expects to have seven to eight trails open. Weimer said she’s looking forward to getting people out on the mountain.

“It’s great looking up and seeing all the white and the mountains of snow piled up,” she said.

Since the resorts have really concentrated on covering high traffic areas, Weimer said skiers shouldn’t have any early season conditions to worry about. There should be at least 6” to 12” built up.

Want to learn to ski? Liberty Mountain Resort offers a special Learn to Ski package. For $49, skiers and snowboarders get a full day lift pass, rentals and a first time lesson.

The resorts hope to continue snowmaking into next week and have more terrain open by the end of the month.
