WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) - Rangers in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park are leading a series of bicycle tours combining autumn scenery with canal history.

The free program at Williamsport will be offered each Sunday in October.

A park statement says the afternoon tours will take about three hours and cover nearly 10 miles of the canal from Williamsport upstream to Four Locks.

At stops along the way, rangers will discuss the canal's role in the local economy and this year's 100th anniversary of the creation of the National Park Service.

The C&O Canal parallels the Potomac River for nearly 185 miles between Cumberland and the District of Columbia. The towpath, once used by barge-pulling mules, is now a popular hiking and biking trail.
