For the first time in a decade, there’s a new voice Howard.  Ross Hannon is the new head coach of the Lions after serving as defensive backs coach last season.

“New beginnings are always exciting.  Just being a head coach from a position coach certainly brings new challenges, got to wear a different hat day in day out, managing the program,” said Hannon.

This is Hannon’s third head-coaching job after leading Centennial and Mt. Hebron in the past. He takes over for Bruce Strunk, who stepped down after nine seasons, a 73-29 record and the last three 4A North region championships.

“They are two different styles of coaching. Coach Hannon is definitely a players’ coach,” said Howard linebacker Ryan Kearney. “Everyone on the team can relate to him. He’s just a really great coach.”

Who is now in charge of delivering the next set of trophies.

“I’m sure there was no pressure following Cal Ripken or Ray Lewis either,” joked Hannon. “You don’t fix something that’s not broke. So, I’ve made as little change as possible.”

Howard is poised for another run of success, led by returning starting quarterback Robby Porter.

“I feel a lot more confident because having 13 games under your belt really helps in the long run,” said the senior QB. “Now I know what the varsity speed is.  I know the offense a lot more. I’m a lot more comfortable.”

Last week the Lions opened the season with a home win against Glenelg. Friday, for game two, they get on the bus to visit Marriotts Ridge.

“This is our first road game of the year. It will be a good test because they always prepare us well. They look really good on film,” said Porter.

“We haven’t played them in a couple years and it’s going to be their first game of the season so they’re going to be jacked up, ready to go,” added Hannon.

Kickoff between the Lions and Mustangs on Friday is at 7:00 p.m.
