One of the great things about the sport of fishing is its tradition and heritage. Handing that tradition down to the next generation of anglers is also one of our greatest responsibilities.

Whether it's a grandparent showing a grandchild the spot they've fished since they were little, or a mom and dad teaching their child to love and respect the outdoors, it's on us to pass these things along to ensure generations to come will be able to enjoy the same opportunities we do now.

This weekend offers up a chance to do just that. The Coastal Conservation Association of Marylandholds its Central Region Youth Derby Saturday morning at Piney Run Park and Nature Center in Sykesville.

"The derby had been in place for several years. Last year CCA got involved, promoted the derby in schools and Cub Scout groups and the number of kids jumped from 25 to 80. Carroll County Rec & Parks was tickled to death," said Bill Montgomery.

Montgomery, a member of CCA Maryland, is this year's Youth Derby Coordinator and owner of BKD Lures.

"One of the thing's that's important to our company is promoting youth fishing. We do it for the kids, especially those who may not have the knowledge or resources," he said.

Speaking of resources, Bass Pro Shops got on board this year and is donating 90 fishing rods and reels to the first 90 kids to sign up. And Montgomery's BKD Lures is donating free youth memberships to CCA Maryland, which includes a magazine geared toward keeping kids interested in fishing.

Prizes will be awarded to kids who catch the biggest Crappie, Yellow Perch and Bluegill. There will also be a "Casting Contest" and volunteers will teach kids knot tying and safety while on the water.

Pre-registration for the derby is encouraged, but Montgomery says the event is open to anyone who shows up.
