Maryland defeated Rutgers 14-8 Saturday night to win the program's first Big Ten championship.

The Terps scored early and often. Sophomore Conner Kelly got things started with a goal just a minute into the first quarter.  Rutgers answered to tie it up at 1-1. Bryan Cole scored, assisted by Matt Rambo to give the Terps a one-point lead. The Scarlet Knights tied it again.

Then Maryland's offense took off. Goals from Kelly, Rambo gave the Terps a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At the beginning of the second, Rutgers scored to cut the lead to 5-3. It's the closest the Scarlet Knights would come to catching Maryland. The Terps led by at least three points the rest of the contest.

Goalie Kyle Bernlohr had 12 saves before he left the game late in the fourth.

Kelly scored four goals, giving him eight total for the tournament. Dylan Maltz and Rambo each had three.

Rambo was named the Big Ten Tournament MVP. He's scored a point in 35-straight games. Rambo scored his 100th career goal during the game, making him the 13th player in Maryland history to do so.

Three Terps were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team:

  • Connor Kelly
  • Kyle Bernlohr
  • Bryan Cole

With the Big Ten title, Maryland is headed to its 14th straight NCAA tournament. The NCAA selection show it set for Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
