So far, through three games, it's been a Maryland Terrapins season defined by injury to the most important position on the field, the quarterback position. On Tuesday, with their Big Ten conference opener on deck, Terps head coach DJ Durkin announced more bad news regarding QB Kasim Hill.
“Kasim suffered a torn ACL. So, he’ll be getting surgery here sometime soon. We don’t have the date set yet. We’re waiting for the swelling to go down,” said Durkin.
Hill suffered the season-ending injury during the first quarter of Saturday’s loss to Central Florida.
“It was a tough play,” said Durkin. “He was competing and got spun around, got hit and obviously went down in the game. He’ll bounce back. He’s got a great future in football both here and beyond.”
The promising freshman is the Terps’ second starting quarterback in three weeks to go down with a season-ending ACL injury. Tyrrell Pigrome started the season-opener before tearing his ACL at Texas.
“What are we going to do? We’re going to go buckle up and go fight and do whatever we got to do and pick each other up. Here we are. It’s the hand we’ve been dealt,” said Durkin. “It’s no one’s fault. Those guys obviously were competing like crazy and they got hurt on the field. It’s part of the game. It’s part of what happens.”
Now the Terps turn to sophomore QB Max Bortenschlager.
“We all have faith in Max. He’s a great guy and I trust him,” said Terps center Brendan Moore.
“He can throw the ball well and I feel like any quarterback that can throw well, when he’s given time and he’s comfortable, he’ll execute,” added Terps running back Lorenzo Harrison.
Bortenschlager was 15 of 16 passing for 132 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions after coming in against UCF. He looks for his first college win when he leads the Terps into the program’s first-ever trip to Minnesota. Kickoff set for noon on Saturday.
