COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Maryland coach DJ Durkin has hired former Kentucky assistant Andy Buh as his new defensive coordinator.

Buh was Kentucky's outside linebackers coach since 2015 and was recently promoted to also serve as special teams coordinator. Durkin and Buh were on the same staff at Stanford in 2007.

"Andy I go back a ways, we worked at Stanford together in 2007, 2008 and 2009," Durkin said. "I can't say enough about Andy as a person and as a coach... There was only one phone call I made. There's only one person I spoke to about this job and that was it. I knew in my mind who we had to go with."

Buh (pronounced boo) served as the defensive coordinator at Stanford, Nevada and Cal prior to working at Kentucky.

Durkin says Buh is "an excellent fit for our program."

"I knew the right guy was Andy and if he was willing and able to do it that's what we were going to do, and if not, to be honest with you I probably would have waited a while till maybe after spring," Durkin said. "I just knew in my heart and my gut that he was the right guy."

Buh replaces Scott Shafer, who resigned as Maryland's defensive coordinator on Friday, citing "personal reasons."

Buh says his style fits the philosophy of Durkin, who was defensive coordinator at Michigan before coming to Maryland.

Buh says, "We are an attacking-style of defense. We want to dictate to the offense what we are going to do."
