Established in 2002, the Preston Mitchum, Jr. Foundation (PMJF) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that provides enlightening and educational programming to disadvantaged and underserved residents in the Baltimore Metropolitan area, while motivating individuals to "give back" to the community.
The foundation seeks to educate, empower and provide a vision of a brighter future for youth through educational after-school program initiatives, and community-based services in targeted communities with high rates of domestic violence, substance abuse and other issues that destroy families and neighborhoods.
For the past seventeen years, I have been a Baltimore News Journalist for WMAR-TV ABC 2. During this time, I witnessed the daily effects of violence and poverty on our families, which is one of the reasons I founded PMJF. I also wanted to inspire others to give of their time, talent and resources to enrich the lives of people in need of assistance throughout the Baltimore communities where we live and work.
In its eleven year history, PMJF has earned national and local community recognition for programs that help build healthy communities and improve the quality of life through the support of sound educational programs and community services. Our foundation was awarded the William R. Burleigh Award for "Distinguished Community Service" by The Scripps Howard Foundation; and in 2007 Baltimore County Executive, Jim Smith recognized PMJF with Maryland's highest volunteer honor, the "Maryland You Are Beautiful" award.
Our foundation's annual Essay Contest encourages 5th and 6th grade students statewide to use their creative thinking skills to write a compelling essay in response to one of the questions provided. Please visit www.pmjfoundation.org to learn more about the essay contest and how you can participate.
Through our year round programming (Career Awareness Project after-school program, Giving Back Campaigns, Essay Contest) the foundation has provided services to over 24,000 individuals. We are truly blessed to be able to serve the community we love. If you would like to become a sponsor of one of our programs, please contact us. Preston Mitchum Jr., Founder
Since its founding in 1968, Long & Foster Real Estate has focused on giving back to the communities in which its agents and employees live and work. It's a commitment that founder Wes Foster made long ago and that the company continues to this day. Mr. Foster wanted to build a company that did more than just help people buy and sell homes—he wanted to help them achieve the American Dream and to build thriving communities for their families, friends and neighbors.
That philosophy of giving back has become an integral part of Long & Foster's culture, and it's one of the reasons that the team from Long & Foster's Baltimore, Md., region decided to partner with WMAR ABC2 in sponsoring The Preston Mitchum, Jr., Foundation's annual essay contest. The PMJ Foundation has made a positive impact on so many individuals in the Baltimore area, and their mission of educating, empowering and providing a vision of a brighter future for youth aligns perfectly with Long & Foster's own philosophies.
Together, we'll promote the importance of reading and writing, employing critical-thinking skills and effectively communicating. These are values that not only enrich the lives of the students participating in the contest, but also in their communities, and it's truly our privilege to support the PMJ Foundation in these efforts.
