Public schools in Alexandria will be closed Wednesday after more than 300 teachers and staff filed for leave in observance of International Women's Day.

The school system announced the decision Monday, and apologized to families that now must find childcare options.

Some activists have called for a general women's strike on Wednesday, calling it "A Day Without Women."

Alexandria City Public Schools said the decision to close is based on the inability to provide sufficient staff to cover all classrooms.

The class day will not be made up and will now be considered a teacher work day.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City school district in North Carolina announced last week that it is canceling classes for similar reasons.
