SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -

Hundreds of people, including some who brought their pets, rallied outside Salt Lake City police headquarters, seeking answers from the department about an officer who fatally shot a dog in a backyard while searching for a missing child.

Sean Kendall, the owner of the Weimaraner killed June 18, told the Salt Lake Tribune he felt overwhelmed by the show of community support on Saturday.  The above video is Kendall's recording on the day of the incident.

Kendall has called for the officer to be fired.

Police Chief Chris Burbank said Friday that Officer Brett Olsen felt the animal was a threat.

Police say Olsen entered the backyard of a Sugar House home after no one answered the door.

Police later found the missing boy safe inside his home

Olsen remained on duty pending a departmental investigation.
