Not all police dogs make the cut, but most don't flunk out of police dog academy for being too friendly. That's what happened to Gavel a German Sheppard in Australia. But now Gavel has a new purpose in life.

He'd been trying to join the Queensland police force, but officials determined he was too sociable to do police work, and didn't have the natural ability of life on the front line. So he was removed from the Queensland Dog Squad roster.

Now Gavel has been made the Queensland Governor's Vice-Regal Dog. His duties include welcoming guests and greeting tour groups who visit the Government House. He also participates in special ceremonies, and has custom-made uniforms to wear on those occasions.
