Bees attacked a pit bull in a Florida community Saturday, killing the family pet.
At about 4:46 p.m., police officers and animal control responded to a home in the 400 block of Decordre Court in the Fort Pierce area after a bee attack of a dog had been reported. A huge bee hive was discovered in a tree at the address, according to police.
The dog, which lived in the nearby 300 block of South 20th Street, was outside near the tree when it was attacked and stung multiple times. The dog’s owner was stung while trying to remove the dog.
Animal Control Officer William Blue rescued the pit bull and took it to an emergency animal hospital. The pit bull died before making it to the hospital, according to police. St. Lucie Fire Rescue transported the dog’s owner to a local hospital.
While Fort Pierce Police have contacted a bee specialist to safely remove the hive, they have cordoned off the area to keep people away from the area.
Residents and their neighbors are being advised to keep children away from the area and to not disturb the hive.
