How to improve your resume

There's a lot to prepare when you're applying to jobs: finding the perfect position, writing an impressive resume, proofing your cover letter, and practicing for an interview.

Despite all the hard work you put in to listing all your previous experience and organizing the lines on your resume, HR managers barely look at it.

A recent Career Builder survey says more than 40 percent of them spend less than a minute going over it. In fact, 24 percent say they spend less than 30 seconds.

That means you have a very short period of time to grab that person's attention, but you also don't want to make easy mistakes that will immediately get your resume thrown into the "no" pile.

Don't list smoking under your hobbies, and don't say you have great attention to detail and then misspell the word "attention." Don't claim you would work harder if you get paid more, either.

Those are all mistakes HR managers say they've seen before. So what do they really want?

Customize your resume to the position you're applying for. List your skill sets first on your resume. Don't forget to include a cover letter -- employers want to know why you think you're a good fit for the job.
