WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Talk about a really close call.
An 84-year-old woman crashed her car into a Winter Haven CVS pharmacy Wednesday, narrowly missing a customer.
The crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. at the CVS on State Road 540.
Margaret Underwood was backing out of a parking space in her 2008 Chevy Impala when she struck a Chevrolet Suburban. Underwood's husband got out and went to check on the driver of the Suburban.
Underwood then put the car in drive to return to the parking space. For unknown reasons, she accelerated and crashed through the store's front doors and wound up about 25 feet inside.
Just prior to the crash, a customer, Adrienne Watkins, 80, was walking along the front counter, pushing a shopping cart. She stopped and backed up to reach for an item.
That was when Underwood's car crashed into the store, narrowly missing Watkins.
A CVS associate, Stormy Fulcomer, heard the commotion and ran to find the car's engine revving at high RPM and the wheels spinning.
Fulcomer helped Watkins to safety and then went to the car to help Underwood and shut the engine off.
According to the statement, if Watkins had not backed up, her injuries could have been much more severe. She was taken to Winter Haven Hospital when she was treated for cuts and bruises.
Underwood was cited for improper backing and careless driving.
Damage to the store was estimated at $65,000.
