Summer is rapidly coming to an end, and it's almost time for kids to head back to school and hit the books. If you have a child who struggles to find reading enjoyable, help him or her prepare for a successful school year with these five, free literacy apps.
1. We Read Too
For children of color who struggle to find books with characters who look like them, We Read Too is the app they need. Founded by recent Dartmouth College graduate, Kaya Thomas, We Read Too is a gateway to over 600 diverse books written by authors of color. You can search the app by author or title, and share your favorite books through text message, e-mail or social media. You can also view the book on Safari to buy it. We Read Too has been used by more than 15,000 book-lovers and is available to download on iPhones and Androids.
2. BrainPOP Featured Movie
If your child is a visual learner, BrainPOP Featured Movie is a great app that entertains and educates. The app is designed for kids ages 9 to 11, and allows them to watch a new animated movie every day. At the end of each movie, your child will be tested on their knowledge with an interactive quiz. Kids can explore hundreds of subjects within science, math, engineering and tech, English, social studies, health, arts and music. The app is available to download on the iTunes App Store, Google Play, the Amazon App Store and the Windows Store.
3. ABCmouse.com - Early Learning Academy
Parents and educators have called ABCmouse.com the number one learning program for ages 2 through 8. The app is proven to boost learning and help children grasp literacy and math skills at a fast pace. There are over 8,500 fun and interactive activities that incorporate animations, songs, art, puzzles and offline printables. ABCmouse.com is available on the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon App Store.
4. Spelling Bee Lists 1000+
Along with becoming strong readers, kids must also learn to become strong spellers. With over 1,000 practice tests to choose from, Spelling Bee is a promising app for first through 12th graders. The app is loaded with a variety of spelling activities that are turned into fun games to make learning enjoyable. Spelling Bee is available for download on the iPhone and iPad.
5. Endless Reader
It's never too early to teach your child to read, so why not do it with the Endless Reader app? Designed for ages 5 and under, this app uses adorable cartoon creatures to help kids embrace reading. Your child will develop literary skills through a variety of interactive sight word activities. Endless Reader offers in-app purchases and can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon App Store.
