Fire officials say both the husband and wife who were critically injured in a fire have died.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal said in a news release that the fire was reported early Monday in a one-story, single-family home on Old Love Point Road in Stevensville.

Firefighters entered the home through the front door and removed a 77-year-old man and his 76-year-old wife. Both were taken from their Eastern Shore home to the Johns Hopkins Burn Center in Baltimore.

Nearly 40 firefighters from several departments fought the blaze for an hour before bringing it under control. Damage is estimated at $240,000.

Investigators from the state fire marshal's office and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the cause of the blaze.

The couple's remains have been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for autopsies.
