A local football star who died after collapsing during a workout at the University of Maryland will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Jordan McNair died last Wednesday and the school says it will soon begin an external review of all of its safety practices for student-athletes.

McNair's funeral is taking place at the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Northwest Baltimore. The wake begins at 9:30 a.m. and the service starts at 10:30 a.m. McNair will then be buried at King Memorial Park.

McNair was going to be a sophomore at the University of Maryland and played for the football team. He collapsed during a workout on May 29 and died last Wednesday, but a cause of death has not been released.

The 19-year-old graduated from McDonough and was a two-time all-metro guard.

On Tuesday, University of Maryland officials confirmed to WMAR-2 News that they have contracted with Walters Incorporated, a sports medicine consulting firm led by Dr. Rod Walters, a renown sports athletic trainer.

Walters will reportedly conduct an external review, evaluating relevant policies, practices and protocols carried out by the school's athletic teams. The review for all student-athletes will start later this week and could take up to 90 days.

The university says football practices are still voluntary until further notice. Right now they say they want students to be able to grieve the loss of McNair and the school will continue to provide counseling services to the students.
