Maryland state troopers are increasing their traffic enforcement on Route 301 in Prince George's County in an effort to combat rising crash-related deaths on that stretch of highway.

Between January 1 and May 1, there have been seven deaths along Route 301 in the county, police said, of which three were pedestrians. A combination of careless pedestrians and speeding drivers are largely the cause, police said.

During the first three months of 2018, police made 1,722 traffic stops on Route 301, up from 543 last year. That has resulted in 830 citations, 649 warnings, 243 equipment repair orders, and 15 impaired driving arrests in 2018.

State police say they will continue the targeted enforcement campaign in the coming weeks, urging drivers to obey speed limits and be aware of other traffic control devices. Pedestrians are asked to consider the risk of crossing such a busy highway, particularly at night.
