Transportation rally in Annapolis today

Coalition to rally for transportation funding

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A coalition of Maryland business groups will be rallying for increasing revenue for transportation needs.

The coalition, which will rally in Annapolis on Thursday, includes the Greater Baltimore Committee, the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.

They are hoping to persuade lawmakers to adopt recommendations by a state panel on transportation funding to increase annual revenue by about $800 million.

The coalition also is urging lawmakers to enact protections to make sure the money is not shifted away from transportation needs. Gov. Martin O'Malley, a Democrat, is expected to make an announcement in the next week or two about his plans for a gas tax increase. The 23.5-cent gas tax was last raised in 1992.
