Making sure people have a safe, efficient come from their homes to their workplace. That's the goal of a new transportation project in Baltimore City.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake welcomed U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx to announce a new pilot program to help advance transportation projects in Baltimore. Areas like the Fulton Avenue bridge and the Camden Marc station will see nearly 5 million dollars worth of renovations -- most of it is funded by the federal government.

"This project is just a larger part of the strategy of the United States Department of Transportation," Foxx said. "We call it 'Ladder Step.' We are engaging at the local level to imagine a transportation system that connects everyone and makes sure there is no zip code in America that is cut off from opportunity."

Baltimore is one of seven cities across the nation selected to participate in the program.
